    Don't excoriate Prasar Bharati

    Synopsis

Apropos ‘How Autonomous is Prasar Bharati?' (ET, May 6), censoring and terming portions unsavoury depend on which side of the fence one is.

Apropos ‘How Autonomous is Prasar Bharati?' (ET, May 6), censoring and terming portions unsavoury depend on which side of the fence one is. Neither Doordarshan nor AIR has ever been found to be partisan or biased.

In this age of cut-throat rivalry from private channels, it cannot afford to look idiotic by airing untruth. May be the ubiquitous pyrotechnics of the private channels are absent in Doordarshan. The idea of making it answerable to the Parliament is excellent. An independent overseeing authority will make the organisation more conscientious and better equipped.

You need Roads for Road Shows

One hopes the importance of constructing roads that can withstand the pressures of vehicular traffic and heavy rainfall is the biggest lesson learnt by candidates during innumerable road shows while campaigning for elections (‘Campaigning in East Delhi', ET, May 6).

The concerned authorities should ensure that contracts are awarded to those construction companies that can guarantee quality roads. Cancellation of contract and stiff monetary penalties should be imposed in cases where their work doesn't meet the requisite standards of quality.

    An Avoidable Controversy

It is the wont of BJP candidates to use the name of Lord Ram at inappropriate time and give credence to the general perception that the party is not secular (‘Lord Ram Puts Modi in a Spot of Bother', ET, May 6).

At a time when the nation faces security threats from terrorists from across the world, Narendra Modi's use of the term Ram Rajya in a Faizabad meeting was avoidable. That the portrait of Lord Ram was placed behind the podium added to the problem. However, in normal circumstances, these wouldn't be wrong actions.
