BJ BJP cannot be fought in the 2024 LS election with such TMC elements: Sircar
Kolkata: In a huge embarrassment for West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Jawhar Sircar has said that a section of the ruling party is "completely rotten" and will not be able to contest against BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election with such elements.
Sircar said that following the arrest of Partha Chatterjee and Anubrata Mondal, his family and friends had asked him to quit politics. Chatterjee was arrested in connection with the alleged multi-crore West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) scam, while Mondal was arrested in alleged cattle smuggling scam.
Sircar, a former bureaucrat, was elected to the Rajya Sabha on a TMC ticket in 2021, when a seat fell vacant after the resignation of Dinesh Trivedi.
Meanwhile, TMC MP Sougata Roy slammed Sircar over his open criticism of the party and said that the former bureaucrat is free to leave the party as it does not need "selfish people at the time of crisis".
Attacking his party colleague, Roy said if Sircar is unhappy with the party then he should resign. Sircra;'s resignation will not have any impact on TMC, Roy stressed.
"If he (Sircar) is so embarrassed by the developments, then why is he still holding on to his post? He should immediately resign from his post of (Rajya Sabha) MP. He is free to leave the party, it won't have any impact. People like Jawhar Sircar had no role in TMC's struggle or in its fight in the last Bengal Assembly polls," Roy said.
Besides Roy, another TMC leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, slammed Sircar Sircar for his comments against the party. He accused Sircar of "joining politics to enjoy the fruits of being an MP".
"People like Jawhar Sircar join politics after retirement from the IAS to enjoy the fruits of being an MP. Now when there is crisis in the party, they try to run away. He says he wants to fight against Narendra Modi, but he is nothing without the tag of a TMC MP," the TMC leader said.
