Of all the regional festivals that Hindi movies have popularised throughout India the most, Mumbai’s Ganesh Chaturthi and Karwa Chauth are the very top. Bollywood selected Karwa Chauth as it perfectly fitted into the image of blissful, society-sanctioned, post-marital love and devotion.

Among regional festivals that have been most widely publicised by Bollywood, Karva Chauth takes the pride of place — along with Mumbai’s Ganesh Festival. But while Ganesh is a pan-Indian Hindu deity, most would never have known the quaint one-day festival called Karva Chauth — had it not been for Hindi cinema.

আঞ্চলিক উৎসবগুলির মধ্যে যেগুলি বলিউডের চলচ্চিত্রের মাধ্যমে সর্বাধিক প্রচারিত হয়েছে, করবা চৌথ ব্রতটি তার মধ্যে অন্যতম। মুম্বইয়ের গণেশ উৎসবের মতো এর আবেদনও চলচ্চিত্রে অনস্বীকার্য। তবে গণেশ পুরাণে বর্ণিত একজন হিন্দু দেবতা। সেক্ষেত্রে বেশিরভাগ মানুষই কখন করবা চৌথ ব্রতের নাম সেভাবে জানত না — যদি না এটি হিন্দি সিনেমায় ব্যাপক ব্যবহার হতো।

Enough is enough — says Bollywood and many others who are sick and tired of toxic trial by media and daily abuses hurled on tabloid television. Terms like “dirt”, “filth”, “scum”, “druggies”, “cocaine and LSD drenched” and “the dirtiest industry in the country” have been freely used by some obviously-interested channels in the past few weeks, that went on lynching the reputation of film personalities with just wisps of their ‘evidence’.
