Manmohan Singh never opened up to anyone about his problems as he had mastered the art of suffering in silence. That is why we hardly knew how bad his health was until he left us suddenly — without any photo ops in the hospital or any media blitz.

The year 1991 is etched in the history of India as the first significant break with the economic policy that was so dear to the Congress after Independence. It was then that I first met Dr Manmohan Singh, who served as the Finance Minister in Narasimha Rao’s cabinet.

মনমোহন সিংহ কখনও নিজের সমস্যা নিয়ে অন্যের কাছে মুখ খুলতেন না। নীরবে যন্ত্রণা সহ্যকে শিল্পের পর্যায়ে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। আর তাই আমরা প্রায় জানিই না তাঁর স্বাস্থ্য কতটা ভেঙে পড়েছিল, আজ আচম্বিতে চলে যাওয়ার পর যেন সম্বিৎ ফিরল।
