Islamic Festival | ইসলামি উৎসব

There are admirable traits in all religions that I salute. Very recently, the world's largest congregation of humanity took their sacred dip at the maha-prayag of Mahakumbh. Yogi's team claims 66 crores bathed, while mature estimates place this at 25 crores — which is still a world record of faith drawing so many. We admire the tremendous social service that Sikhs render across the globe, like offering free food to all irrespective of religion or origin, in every Gurudwara.

I remember the tremendous tension that I went through as SDO nd Magistrate in charge of “Muharram” at Loha Gate in Agarpara in 1978 — as oceans of frenzied humans went all around me, lashing and bleeding themselves with whips, chains and fighting dangerously swords — crying "Ya Hasan, Ya Husain"! It continued through the evening and night. Though there were grievous and other (self-inflicted) injuries, I could report early in the morning, that it was “peaceful” and “law and order under control”.

সত্যি বলতে কী, মুসলিম সমাজের বাইরে বেশির ভাগ মানুষ ঠিক বুঝতে পারেন না, ‘শুভ মহরম’ বার্তা পাঠানো উচিত কি না। মহরম আসলে একটি দিন নয়, একটি মাস। ইসলামি হিজরি ক্যালেন্ডারের প্রথম, এবং পবিত্রতম মাসগুলির একটি। প্রসঙ্গত, প্রাক্-ইসলাম পশ্চিম এশিয়াতেও কিছু কিছু মাসকে পবিত্র বলে মনে করা হত এবং সেই সব মাসে যুদ্ধবিগ্রহ নিষিদ্ধ ছিল।

প্রতি বছর মিলাদ-উন-নবি দিনটি আরও একটা ছুটির দিন। কিন্তু কেন ছুটি, তা নিয়ে আমাদের মাথাব্যথা নেই। রবিউল আওয়াল মাসের দ্বাদশ দিনটির আন্তর্জাতিক পরিচিতি ‘মলিদ’ নামে, এই দিনেই নবি মহম্মদ জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন বলে কথিত।

পবিত্র হজ-এর মাসের দশম দিনে পালিত হয় ইদ-উল-জুহা। অন্য নাম ইদ-আল-আদা। এটি চার দিনের উৎসব। মক্কার পূর্ব দিকে মাউন্ট আরাফত থেকে হজযাত্রীদের নেমে আসার সঙ্গে এই উৎসবের সমাপতন ঘটে। পারস্যে এর নাম ইদ-এ-গোরবান, তুরস্কে কুরবান বয়রামি, বলকান অঞ্চলে কুরবান বজরম, মান্দারিন চিনা ভাষায় একে বলে কুয়েরপাং চিয়ে, মালয়েশিয়া ও ইন্দোনেশিয়ায় হারি রায়া কোরবান, বাংলায় কোরবানির ইদ।

রমজান মাস এবং ইদের চাঁদ, এইটুকু আমরা জানি, কিন্তু ইদ-উল-ফিতর-এর উত্‌স সম্বন্ধে অনেকেরই বিশেষ ধারণা নেই। ভারতের বৃহত্তম ‘সংখ্যালঘু’ সম্প্রদায়ের এই বিরাট উত্‌সবটি সম্পর্কে আর একটু জানলে মন্দ হয় না। আল্লাহ্-র দূতের মুখে কোরান প্রথম শোনার ঘটনাটির স্মারক হিসেবে চান্দ্র ক্যালেন্ডারের নবম মাসকে হজরত মহম্মদ রমজানের উপবাসের জন্য চিহ্নিত করেছিলেন।
