Two recent news stories about Ram from two extremes of India, Ayodhya and Ram Setu, would have caught one’s attention. Where Ayodhya is concerned, the Pandora’s box had actually been opened long ago, in December 1949, when KKK Nair, the not-so-secular district magistrate of Faizabad, facilitated the sudden ‘appearance’ of Ram-Sita images inside Babri Masjid.

যাঁরা ১৯৭১এর ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনাগুলির ক্রমবিকাশ, বিবর্তন ও বাংলাদেশের জন্মের অধ্যায় চোখের সামনে দেখেছেন তাঁদের অনুভূতি, আর যাঁরা পরবর্তী কালে ওই সব গল্পের কথা শুনেছেন বা পড়েছেন কখনই এক হতে পারে না। সেই গভীর আবেগ যার সাথে জড়িয়ে ছিল রাগ, ক্ষোভ, উত্তেজনা, আশা, স্বপ্ন আর এক অদ্ভুত বুকফাটা গর্ব-- আর কোনো দিন বাঙালি জাতি ঠিক ওই ভাবে ওই উল্লাস উপলব্ধি করতে পারবে কি না সন্দেহ। আজ পঞ্চাশ বছর পরেও আমরা যতই বিশ্লেষণ করিনা কেন এর সদুত্তর পাওয়া সত্যিই দুষ্কর।

I have always shied away from gurus and cults, and those who know me well would be surprised at the title that I have chosen. But it encapsulates a deep sense of gratitude to a person who, incidentally, would have roared with laughter had he read these words. When I look back at the seven decades that I have gone through and the many people I have come across, I have absolutely no qualms in acknowledging RP or Shantul Gupta, as a guru without whom the world around would not have been so enriching.

দ্বন্দ্বহীন হয়ে বলতে পারি, রাধাপ্রসাদ গুপ্ত বা 'শাটুলদা'-ই আমার এক ও অদ্ধিতীয় 'গুরু'। স্বীকার করতে সামান্য দ্বিধাও নেই যে, শাটুলদার সঙ্গে দেখা না হলে আমার মনোজগৎ ও বহির্বিশ্ব-চেতনা এতখানি সমৃদ্ধ হয়ে উঠত না। যে বিপুল খ্যাতি এবং মহাস্তরীক ব্যুৎপত্তি তিনি অর্জন করেছিলেন তা সীমাবদ্ধ থাকেনি কোনও একটি বা দু'টি বিষয়ে। অবলীলাক্রমেজ্ঞানচর্চার বহু শাখায় তিনি বিচরণ করেছিলেন।“বহুমুখী প্রতিভাধর" বলতে যা বোঝায়, আমার চোখে রাধাপ্রসাদ গুপ্ত ঠিক তা-ই। পাশাপাশি তিনি একজন অনবদ্য কথক।

Despite the toxic atmosphere in Delhi and the gloomy darkness all around, Parliament is back to ‘business as usual’. Where its upper house is concerned, this means – rather sadly so – that everything shall be kept in a state of constant disarray.

নরেন্দ্র মোদী তাঁর তাঁর কৃষি আইন বাতিল করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ায় বহ কৃষক ও সাধারণ মানুষ উল্লসিত হয়েছেন। কিন্তু দল ও মিডিয়ার মধ্যে মোদীর অনুরাগীরা বেশ অস্বস্তিতে পড়েছেন। বিগত এক বছর ধরে তাঁরা কৃষি আইনের পক্ষ নিয়ে সোচ্চার হয়ে ক্রমাগত কৃষকদের খালিস্তানি, রাষ্ট্রবিরোধী ও সন্ত্রাসবাদী আখ্যা দিয়ে এসেছেন।

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের ২০২১ সালের নির্বাচনের ঐতিহাসিক ফলাফল দেখে আমাদের অনেকের বিশ্বাস হল যে, বাঙালির এখনও লড়ার ক্ষমতা আছে। রাজ্যের নির্বাচকরা ভারতের ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে আক্রমণাত্মক প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে বুঝিয়ে দিলেন, তাঁদের কাছে ওঁর ‘ডবল ইঞ্জিন’ উন্নয়নের টোপের থেকে আত্মসম্মান ও বহুত্বের মূল্য অনেক বেশি। এ রাজ্যে ভোটের আগে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর কুড়িটি সফর ও কাঁড়ি কাঁড়ি জনসভার পরেও তাঁর ম্যাজিকে কাজ হল না কেন, তা উপলব্ধি না করেই তাঁর দল বাঙালিদের তথাকথিত উগ্র আঞ্চলিকতাকে দোষ দিল।

Sorry to be a spoilsport amidst the widespread celebration at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to repeal the controversial farm laws and his ‘apology’ to agitating farmers.

“Little girl, are you lost?” asked a concerned lady who was observing a five-year-old moving around aimlessly at the airport terminal, with a teddy bear tucked under her arm. “No,” said the child rather emphatically, as she looked straight into her eye and added, “it’s my parents who are lost”.

It is usually believed that Narendra Modi’s surgical attack on the economy that he declared through the demonetisation of thousand rupee and five hundred rupee notes, exactly five years ago, was a disaster. Well, it surely devastated a large section of the economy but that does not really mean that Modi failed in what he wanted to achieve. Modi is too complicated to lend himself to a simple black and white analysis as much of what he says and does has several interpretations and objectives. An opportunist par excellence, he turns whatever he can, including his mistakes, to his own advantage.

There are several tales about Kali’s origin, the best known of which comes from the Devi Mahatmya. It says that when Durga was so enraged by demons that her anger burst from her forehead in the form of Kali. Once born, the dark goddess went on the rampage, killing demons and stringing their heads on a chain around her neck. Her dance of death and destruction was stopped only when Shiva lay on her path and she stepped on her husband’s chest by accident. She was terribly embarrassed and finally calmed down. Kali is thus associated with war, death and cremation.

গত 15 সেপ্টেম্বরে নরেন্দ্র মোদীর সরকার হঠাৎ একটি ‘Bad Bank’ ঘোষণা করল আর মন্ত্রিসভা একইসঙ্গে এই অদ্ভুত ব্যাঙ্কের খাতে বিপুল 30,600 কোটি টাকার সরকারি গ্যারান্টি অনুমোদন করল। এই ব্যাঙ্কের আসল নাম National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited, সংক্ষেপে এনএআরসিএল। বাংলায় তর্জমা করলে যার অর্থ হয় জাতীয় সম্পদ পুনর্গঠন সংস্থা।

অনেকেই বোধহয় নরেন্দ্র মোদীর ‘Bad Bank’ নামক নূতন এক ফন্দির কথা শোনেন নি। এই ব্যাংকের ভাল নাম অবশ্য বেশ গালভরা National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd, বা এন এ আর সি এল যার মানে জাতীয় সম্পদ পুনর্গঠন কোম্পানি। মোদীর মন্ত্রিসভা গত ১৫ সেপ্টেম্বরে এর অনুমোদন দিয়েছে। এই সংস্থাকে অর্থনীতিবিদরা bad বলার কারণ এর কাজ হল সব রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত ব্যাংকের যত bad বা অনাদেয় ঋণ এটির ঘাড়ে চাপান হবে। এই ব্যাংকটি অনেকখানি নীলকণ্ঠের মতন হয়ে উঠবে।

চলতি বছরের বাজেট অধিবেশনে নরেন্দ্র মোদী সরকার  ঘোষণা করল যে ২০২১-২২-এ বিলগ্নীকরণ মারফত ১.৭৫ লাখ কোটি টাকা জোগাড় করবে। যে সব জাতীয় সম্পদের উপর থেকে সরকারী নিয়ন্ত্রণ তুলে মোদী  সংস্থা বিক্রি করতে চলেছেন তার মধ্যে আছে আই ডি বি আই  ব্যাংক,  ভারত পেট্রোলিয়ম, শিপিং কর্পোরেশন এবং এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার মত বৃহৎ কোম্পানি। বলা বাহুল্য এর একটিও অবশ্য তাঁর তৈরি নয় কিন্তু কোন অধিকারে তিনি এগুলি বেচতে চলেছেন এই সব মৌলিক প্রশ্ন বা বিতর্ক তুলে সময় নষ্ট না করাই ভালো।

বিগত সংসদের অধিবেশন পূর্বঘোষিত সমাপ্তির আগেই মুলতুবি করে সরকার যেন হাঁপ ছেড়ে বাঁচল। এই চার সপ্তাহে বোঝা গেল, এই সরকার অসহিষ্ণুতা ছাড়া আর কোনও আচরণই বোঝে না। নরেন্দ্র মোদী যতই জনসমর্থন হারাচ্ছেন, ততই তাঁর অসহিষ্ণু স্বরূপ দেখাচ্ছেন। সদ্য প্রকাশিত একটি সমীক্ষার ফল অনুযায়ী, তাঁর জনপ্রিয়তা গত এক বছরে ৬৬ শতাংশ থেকে এক ধাপে পড়ে গিয়েছে ২৪ শতাংশে।
