Today, as we celebrate the Mahavira Jayanti, I am reminded of his association with the western tract of Bengal, known since ancient times as the Rarh or Radh. When I served as the Additional District Magistrate of the Asansol-Durgapur belt of Burdwan (now known as Paschim Barddhaman district) in 1980-81, I had visited the ruins of a famous Jain temple at Punchra.

জানেন কী, এই হালে গঠিত মধ্যপ্রদেশের নতুন মন্ত্রিসভার প্রথম বৈঠকে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিদ্ধান্ত কী ছিল? না, গ্রাম বা শহরের উন্নতি বা গরিব কল্যাণ তো নয়-ই, এমনকি কর্মসংস্থান বৃদ্ধিও সেখানে স্থান পায়নি। তাদের প্রথম ফরমান হল খোলা বাজারে মাছ-মাংস বা ডিম বিক্রি করা যাবে না। এর অনেক আগেই এই রাজ্যে ও অন্য বেশ কয়েকটি রাজ্যে বিদ্যালয়ের মিড-ডে মিলে ডিম বন্ধ করা হয়েছে, যদিও ডাক্তার বলেন অপুষ্ট বাচ্চাদের জন্যে ডিম খুবই স্বাস্থ্যকর।

I was his great admirer and came to know him well from the time I headed All India Radio and Doordarshan, as CEO, Prasar Bharati.

কাহিনির সূচনা ১৯৫২-র অগাস্ট মাসে সিংহলি রেডিওতে একটি হিন্দি ফিল্মি গানের অনুষ্ঠানের মধ্য দিয়ে। পাঁচ বছর আগেই ভারত স্বাধীন হয়েছে। দেশভাগ, দাঙ্গা ও আঞ্চলিক সংঘাতের বাতাবরণেও বাহ্যত দেশটা তখন সংহত, ঐক্যবদ্ধ। তবে সে দেশের না আছে কোনও সাধারণ ভাষা না আছে কোনও অভিন্ন আবেগ। 

“ মশাই, কোন সালে জন্ম আপনার? “ কয়েক বছর আগে অবধি এরকম প্রশ্নের উত্তরে কোনও আম ভারতীয় বলতেন, “ ওই যে বছর বন্যা হল, সে বছরে” কিংবা “ভূমিকম্পের পরের বছর”। সালের অনুল্লেখ ছিল অবশ্যম্ভাবী। আর সালটা যে দিন থেকে শুরু হচ্ছে, সেই নিউ ইয়ার্স ডে বা নববর্ষের দিনটা কেউ খেয়ালই করত না।

As we head to the last day of Navratri it may be good to observe how Hinduism brought together dissimilar customs and rituals in harmony and mutual respect — with no single theme thrusting itself on any. All Hindus agree on the same nine days and ten nights in autumn, but after that, the observances in different regions contrast quite a lot — as the ‘local’ adjusts itself within the ‘universal’.

Durga in her present form incorporates different streams, like Simha Vahini (the goddess who rides the lion), the Mahishasura Mardini (one who slays the Buffalo-Demon) and the Dashabhuja or ten-armed goddess. They evolved in different stages and ages.

জাতিসংঘের শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান ও সংস্কৃতি সংস্থা ইউনেস্কো শান্তিনিকেতনকে বিশ্বের একটি সেরা ঐতিহ্যের স্থান হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করার পর থেকে প্রচুর আলোচনা ও জল্পনা শুরু হয়েছে। ইতিহাস বা সংস্কৃতি নিয়ে উৎসাহ যত বাড়ে ততই মঙ্গল। কিন্তু স্বাভাবিক প্রশ্ন : এই বিশ্ব সম্মানটি ঠিক কী আর তা বলতে কী বোঝায়?

দেশের ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ মানুষেরা যখন হিন্দুত্বের উগ্র রূপ দেখে খুব বিব্রত হচ্ছিলেন তখন অনেকেই খেয়াল করেননি যে ‘হিন্দিত্ব’ হয়তো তার চেয়েও বেশি ভয়ঙ্কর। ‘হিন্দিত্ব’ সংখ্যাগুরুদের মধ্যেই হিন্দি ভাষাকে গায়ের জোরে চাপিয়ে দিচ্ছে। আমাদের যুক্তরাষ্ট্রীয় কাঠামোয় প্রধান হিন্দুত্বের চেয়েও অধিক ক্ষতিকর এই ‘হিন্দিত্ব’। এর প্রবক্তারা বলেন যে, হিন্দি রাষ্ট্রীয় ভাষা তাই দোষ নেই, কিন্তু তা সত্যি নয়। সংবিধান অনুযায়ী রাষ্ট্রভাষা কিছু নেই।

Few can deny that India is seared right through, over several vexing issues, among which is whether the two sacred epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are actually history or just myths. There is hardly any middle ground, as rationalists and left- liberals are absolutely certain that the epics are only myths, while a large section of Hindus refuse to believe they are not historical.

Among regional festivals that have been most widely publicised by Bollywood, Karva Chauth takes the pride of place — along with Mumbai’s Ganesh Festival. But while Ganesh is a pan-Indian Hindu deity, most would never have known the quaint one-day festival called Karva Chauth — had it not been for Hindi cinema.

আঞ্চলিক উৎসবগুলির মধ্যে যেগুলি বলিউডের চলচ্চিত্রের মাধ্যমে সর্বাধিক প্রচারিত হয়েছে, করবা চৌথ ব্রতটি তার মধ্যে অন্যতম। মুম্বইয়ের গণেশ উৎসবের মতো এর আবেদনও চলচ্চিত্রে অনস্বীকার্য। তবে গণেশ পুরাণে বর্ণিত একজন হিন্দু দেবতা। সেক্ষেত্রে বেশিরভাগ মানুষই কখন করবা চৌথ ব্রতের নাম সেভাবে জানত না — যদি না এটি হিন্দি সিনেমায় ব্যাপক ব্যবহার হতো।

Today is Lakshmi Puja in Bengal and the East comprising of Assam, Odisha and Tripura. It is popularly known as the Kojagori Purnima and the East insists on invoking Lakshmi on the full moon day of the lunar month of Ashwin, while the North and West worship Lakshmi Puja a little later, on the darkest moon night, Amavasya, as Diwali.

আজ বাংলার ঘরে ঘরে ধনদেবী লক্ষ্মীর আরাধনা। আর অসম, ওড়িশা ও ত্রিপুরা নিয়ে গঠিত পূর্বাঞ্চলে কোজাগরী পূর্ণিমা নামে পরিচিত। পূর্বাঞ্চলে আশ্বিন মাসের পূর্ণিমাতে লক্ষ্মীকে আহ্বান করা হয়। সেখানে উত্তর এবং পশ্চিম ভারতে একটু পরে, অন্ধকার রাতে, কার্তিক মাসের অমাবস্যাতে দীপাবলি হিসাবে লক্ষ্মী পূজার জন্য প্রদীপ প্রজ্জ্বলন করা হয়। দক্ষিণে কয়েকদিন আগেই নবরাত্রি পালন অর্থাৎ ৯টি রাতের মধ্যে ৩টিতে লক্ষ্মীর পূজা করার ঐতিহ্য রয়েছে। কয়েক সহস্রাব্দ ধরে ভারতে ঐক্যের মধ্যে এভাবেই বৈচিত্র্যের বিকাশ ঘটে চলেছে।

Aldous Huxley was among the first to brand Gandhi and his movements `anti- science’. “Tolstoyan’s and Gandhiites tell us to `return to nature’,” he said, “in other words, abandon science altogether and live like primitives”. This impression was surely in currency and, in the absence of a determined, evidence laden rebuttal, it continues to prevail. Dr Meghnad Saha once told the Russians that he and his fellow scientists had “as little regard” for Gandhi’s economic and social theories “as you ‘the Russians’ have for Tolstoy”.

জাতিসংঘের শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান ও সংস্কৃতি সংস্থা, ইউনেস্কো, কলকাতার দুর্গা পুজোকে এক বিশেষ সম্মানে ভূষিত করেছে। এর নাম ‘ইনট্যাঞ্জিবল কালচারাল হেরিটেজ অব হিউম্যানিটি’, যার মানে সম্পূর্ণ মানব জাতির এক বিশিষ্ট সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য। এতে শুধুমাত্র গর্বিত হলে হবে না, আমাদের দায়িত্বও অনেকাংশে বেড়ে গেছে।

গত বছর ইউনেস্কো, অর্থাৎ রাষ্ট্রপুঞ্জের শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান ও সংস্কৃতি সংস্থা, কলকাতার দুর্গাপুজোকে বিশাল সম্মানে ভূষিত করেছে। আমাদের শারদীয় উৎসব হল একটি ‘ইনট্যানজিবল কালচারাল হেরিটেজ অব হিউম্যানিটি’, মানে মানবজাতির এক বিশিষ্ট সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য। এই প্রথম বার কলকাতার কোনও সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য এত বড় বিশ্বব্যাপী সম্মান পেয়েছে, অতএব মহানগরীর উৎফুল্ল হওয়ার যথেষ্ট কারণ আছে। ‘কিন্তু এতে রাজ্য সরকার এত উল্লসিত কেন, প্রস্তাবটি তো তৈরি করেছিলেন দক্ষ বিশেষজ্ঞরা?’— যাঁরা এই ধরনের হিংসুটে প্রশ্ন তুলছেন, তাঁরা জানেন না যে এর আগে কোনও রাজ্য সরকার এই সব বিষয়ে কোনও উৎসাহই দেখাত না। তাই শান্তিনিকেতনকেও বিশ্বসম্মান দেওয়া কষ্টকর হয়ে উঠেছিল। আমাদের ছৌ নৃত্য যখন ২০১০-এ ইউনেস্কোর স্বীকৃতি পেয়েছিল তখন কেউ জানতেই পারেনি, কেননা রাজ্যে কোনও প্রচারই হয়নি। ছৌ নিয়ে কিন্তু ওড়িশা ও ঝাড়খণ্ড মেতে উঠেছিল।

When I first met Shivendra Singh Dungarpur in 2014, he had just started his Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) in Mumbai. I was then the Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati in Delhi and he wanted archivists from Doordarshan to join his proposed workshop on restoration and preservation of films and audio visual materials. He had captioned it as the ‘first Film Preservation and Restoration School India’ which was to be held in February 2015.

On the 14th of August, 1947, Pakistan broke free from the erstwhile united India and that very night, India declared freedom. Amidst the euphoria and waves of support were doubts, doomsayers and opponents. This new India was not one entity but consisted of 14 British provinces and 565 princely states, with a mind boggling multiplicity of cultural identities, languages and ethnicities. Many were reminded of John Strachey’s jibe that “there is not and never was an India…no India nation, no people of India.”
