Many have often wondered how the ancient Indic religions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism (Sikhism is not that ‘ancient’), survived and prospered for millennia — without a designated holy book like the Bible or the Koran and with no Mecca, Vatican or Jerusalem to guide. With a little introspection, we come to realise that it is actually this absence of a ‘central command’ and non-uniform format that account for this.

কাহিনির সূচনা ১৯৫২-র অগাস্ট মাসে সিংহলি রেডিওতে একটি হিন্দি ফিল্মি গানের অনুষ্ঠানের মধ্য দিয়ে। পাঁচ বছর আগেই ভারত স্বাধীন হয়েছে। দেশভাগ, দাঙ্গা ও আঞ্চলিক সংঘাতের বাতাবরণেও বাহ্যত দেশটা তখন সংহত, ঐক্যবদ্ধ। তবে সে দেশের না আছে কোনও সাধারণ ভাষা না আছে কোনও অভিন্ন আবেগ। 

“ মশাই, কোন সালে জন্ম আপনার? “ কয়েক বছর আগে অবধি এরকম প্রশ্নের উত্তরে কোনও আম ভারতীয় বলতেন, “ ওই যে বছর বন্যা হল, সে বছরে” কিংবা “ভূমিকম্পের পরের বছর”। সালের অনুল্লেখ ছিল অবশ্যম্ভাবী। আর সালটা যে দিন থেকে শুরু হচ্ছে, সেই নিউ ইয়ার্স ডে বা নববর্ষের দিনটা কেউ খেয়ালই করত না।

As we head to the last day of Navratri it may be good to observe how Hinduism brought together dissimilar customs and rituals in harmony and mutual respect — with no single theme thrusting itself on any. All Hindus agree on the same nine days and ten nights in autumn, but after that, the observances in different regions contrast quite a lot — as the ‘local’ adjusts itself within the ‘universal’.

জাতিসংঘের শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান ও সংস্কৃতি সংস্থা ইউনেস্কো শান্তিনিকেতনকে বিশ্বের একটি সেরা ঐতিহ্যের স্থান হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করার পর থেকে প্রচুর আলোচনা ও জল্পনা শুরু হয়েছে। ইতিহাস বা সংস্কৃতি নিয়ে উৎসাহ যত বাড়ে ততই মঙ্গল। কিন্তু স্বাভাবিক প্রশ্ন : এই বিশ্ব সম্মানটি ঠিক কী আর তা বলতে কী বোঝায়?

দেশের ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ মানুষেরা যখন হিন্দুত্বের উগ্র রূপ দেখে খুব বিব্রত হচ্ছিলেন তখন অনেকেই খেয়াল করেননি যে ‘হিন্দিত্ব’ হয়তো তার চেয়েও বেশি ভয়ঙ্কর। ‘হিন্দিত্ব’ সংখ্যাগুরুদের মধ্যেই হিন্দি ভাষাকে গায়ের জোরে চাপিয়ে দিচ্ছে। আমাদের যুক্তরাষ্ট্রীয় কাঠামোয় প্রধান হিন্দুত্বের চেয়েও অধিক ক্ষতিকর এই ‘হিন্দিত্ব’। এর প্রবক্তারা বলেন যে, হিন্দি রাষ্ট্রীয় ভাষা তাই দোষ নেই, কিন্তু তা সত্যি নয়। সংবিধান অনুযায়ী রাষ্ট্রভাষা কিছু নেই।

Few can deny that India is seared right through, over several vexing issues, among which is whether the two sacred epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are actually history or just myths. There is hardly any middle ground, as rationalists and left- liberals are absolutely certain that the epics are only myths, while a large section of Hindus refuse to believe they are not historical.

Among regional festivals that have been most widely publicised by Bollywood, Karva Chauth takes the pride of place — along with Mumbai’s Ganesh Festival. But while Ganesh is a pan-Indian Hindu deity, most would never have known the quaint one-day festival called Karva Chauth — had it not been for Hindi cinema.

আঞ্চলিক উৎসবগুলির মধ্যে যেগুলি বলিউডের চলচ্চিত্রের মাধ্যমে সর্বাধিক প্রচারিত হয়েছে, করবা চৌথ ব্রতটি তার মধ্যে অন্যতম। মুম্বইয়ের গণেশ উৎসবের মতো এর আবেদনও চলচ্চিত্রে অনস্বীকার্য। তবে গণেশ পুরাণে বর্ণিত একজন হিন্দু দেবতা। সেক্ষেত্রে বেশিরভাগ মানুষই কখন করবা চৌথ ব্রতের নাম সেভাবে জানত না — যদি না এটি হিন্দি সিনেমায় ব্যাপক ব্যবহার হতো।
